Major international competitions for men include the Olympics, World Cup, Junior World Cup, and Pan Am Games. The USA Men’s National Field Hockey Team is ranked 25th in the world and is looking forward to qualifying for its first Hockey World Cup.
Indoor hockey is similar to “field” hockey although it is a different sport with different, yet similar rules. Indoor hockey is a super fast 6v6 game, does not allow hitting, and is scaled down so it can be played inside gymnasiums. The goal is 25% smaller than its outdoor counterpart. International competitions include the Indoor Hockey World Cup and Indoor Hockey Pan Am Games. The USA Men's National Indoor Hockey Team has qualified twice for the Indoor Hockey World Cup.
In the USA, hockey is largely played on the coasts and, unlike almost every other country, the overwhelming number of participants are female and under the age of 21. About 70,000 girls play in high schools, about 7,500 play on college teams and college clubs. After college, again unlike other countries, only a small number of adults find opportunities to continue playing the sport.
